He was focused on turning this opportunity into a way to become proactive rather than reactive to increase efficiency. The current platform was providing ineffective and untimely information, leading to Marines carrying more weight than needed.
Over 475 Marines participated, 277 ideas were submitted, and 16 winners were chosen — one of which being Staff Sergeant Long and his Personal Combat Assistant and Recording Device (PCARD). The innovation is a simple, wearable device that allows Marines to send resupply information from the battlefield in real-time.
Following that success, twenty units of the second prototype were created with the assistance of Massachusetts Institute of Technology - Lincoln Laboratory for a week-long field test at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Long hopes that the PCARD will ultimately reduce the overall carried weight by 33%.
Every time Special Operators prepare to enter a building they face the unknown. Removing uncertainty gives them tactical advantage. What if they could see through walls? This was the challenge a Boise State Hacking for Defense (H4D) team set out to solve on behalf of their US Special Forces Command problem sponsor.
Over the course of the semester Team Lumineye did numerous end user interviews. They decided to develop a tool with a small form factor, to reduce the cognitive burden of operators performing in high pressure situations. Lumineye’s solution was to match a wall penetrating radar with a smartphone to give SOF teams critical situational awareness.
After their H4D class, Lumineye participated in our Starts H4D pitch event, presenting their technology to senior military leadership and venture investors. They refined their strategy in NSIN’s Lift program and their venture has been placed into an upcoming exercise (Thunderstorm 19-4) through the Office of the Secretary of Defense and was selected as a finalist for the 2019 Army xTechSearch.
Together, the communities of defense, academia and venture will drive the innovations that help us realize the better, safer, stronger world we want to build.
