NSIN is a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) organization with the mission to build networks of innovators that generate new solutions to national security problems. NSIN does this by building communities of non-traditional defense problem solvers from the academic and venture communities, presenting these communities with national security problems through direct interaction with the DOD, and supporting the further development and transition of these solutions into the DOD. The principal way in which NSIN achieves its mission is through three mutually supporting portfolios of programs: National Service, Collaboration, and Acceleration. NSIN’s Regional Network Team is physically located in more than 35 different locations throughout the United States and is responsible for building the new communities of problem-solvers through which NSIN executes its programs.

About Your New Role

The Chief of Staff manages NSIN’s HQ Support Staff, consisting of a 6 person communications team, a 3 person Data Analytics Cell, and relevant functional specialists related to contracts, budget, and HR. This position reports directly to NSIN’s Managing Director and is a member of the NSIN Leadership Team. The Chief of Staff is charged with building the processes and systems that support the collection and analysis of key performance indicator data, communications support for the organization, and hiring and onboarding. In the last calendar year, NSIN has nearly doubled in size, and the Chief of Staff will need to ensure that back and front office functions are performed efficiently across NSIN’s nation-wide footprint. The Chief of Staff regularly interfaces with partner offices within the Department of Defense, routinely interacts with senior defense officials on behalf of the Managing Director, and must be adept at making highly bureaucratic systems work quicker and more efficiently to achieve required outcomes. Teamwork is core to the Chief of Staff’s role, and they will need to work closely with NSIN’s three Portfolio Directors and Director of Operations.


What We are Looking for in a Teammate

  • a working knowledge of the venture, academic, and defense ecosystems;
  • prior experience working within or among federal government agencies;
  • at least ten years of relevant public and private sector management experience;
  • an eagerness to serve as a strategic thought partner to the Managing Director, shaping the direction for the organization based on his/her vision;
  • the ability to analyze and evaluate competing priorities and responsibilities to effectively multitask and delegate work share;
  • an innate need for teamwork, and the desire to work in a highly collaborative, matrixed team environment;
  • experience leading an organization or team through periods of rapid scaling and growth;
  • a willingness and aptitude to operate successfully as part of a dispersed team. The Chief of Staff is based at NSIN HQ, but will be required to work with NSIN personnel throughout the country;
  • an unquenchable passion to change the way that DOD solves its problems. NSIN is engaged in hard work and there are long, tough days fighting a daunting bureaucracy

Compensation

This is a Federal Government Position with GS-15 level compensation.
